Climate change has been a hot topic in recent years, so it is no surprise that it is extending into ISO requirements. On February 22, 2024, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) issued an amendment to 31 existing management system standards. This amendment aims to integrate climate change considerations into organizational management systems effective immediately. Of the standards referenced, widely recognized standards ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001, and ISO 45001 are included on the list.
What are the key amendments?
1️⃣ **Clause Added to Clause 4.1:** Organizations are now required to assess the relevance of climate change within their operations under “Understanding the organization and its context.” This results in adding “The organization shall determine whether climate change is a relevant issue” at the end of the subclause.
2️⃣ **Note Addition to Clause 4.2:** While no additional requirement is introduced, a note is added that states “Relevant interested parties can have requirements related to climate change.”
ISO ensures consistency across management system standards by incorporating these amendments into new and updated standards’ requirements.
Which standards are affected?
A total of 31 management system standards have been amended, including ISO 9001:2015, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, ISO 22301:2019, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018, among others.

What factors should organizations consider?
There are three things to consider with this new amendment.
- How does this impact my current certification?
- How does this relate to the 9001 revision coming? and when does this go into affect?
- And what actions do you need to take and do you need assistance to confirm your organization is abiding by the new amendment.
What’s the impact on certified organizations?
In short, no new certification is needed if the management system’s details remain unchanged.
Certified organizations must review internal and external factors and be able to show that you have taken this amendment into account and determined whether or not climate change is relevant to your management system.
Impact specifically to ISO 9001
Not to be confused with the current revision that is scheduled to be released in the future, this is an amendment to ensure as you review your management systems, climate change is something you are taking into consideration.
Specific to 31 management system standards that were amended including ISO 9001, this adds an additional requirement for the organization to determine if climate change is a relevant issue when looking at the intended results of its management system.
