AS 9100

In the same way the automotive industry based their QS 9000 requirements for suppliers on the ISO 9000 standard, the aerospace industry found the minimum requirements laid out in ISO 9000 to be too vague. They too took the wording of ISO 9000 and added specific requirements and activities which reflected the essential elements of an aerospace industry supplier. These provided enhancements in many areas including customer drawing control, subcontractor right-of-entry and flow-down requirements (from customer contracts to sub contractors).

Most suppliers have been controlled by their aerospace industry customers for years and subject to the tight controls that come with contracts. It is likely that most suppliers are substantially compliant.

Registration to AS 9100, passing an independent third party assessment by an accredited registrar, may reduce the number of customer audits and demonstrates to current and potential customers the suppliers enhanced commitment to quality. As ISO 9000 is a subset of the AS standard, ISO 9000 certification comes as part of the package.
